Create a compelling book cover for Caro Giovanni, a historical fiction novel by Madelaine Landry that blends real family history with fictionalized events inspired by World War II-era Italy.
The cover needed to communicate themes of love, friendship, loss, resilience and remembrance while honoring the authentic historical documents that inspired the story itself.
The novel traces its roots to a remarkable collection of letters exchanged between the author’s father, John Brauner, an American soldier serving with General Mark Clark’s Fifth Army during World War II, and Mafalda Riccadonna, an Italian woman he befriended while stationed in northern Italy in 1945.
Decades after his death, the author’s family discovered a collection of wartime correspondence preserved among the contents of his military trunk. These letters became the inspiration for Caro Giovanni, a story set against the backdrop of wartime Italy and the difficult years that followed the end of the war in Europe.
Rather than creating a purely illustrative cover, we looked directly to the historical artifacts that inspired the novel.
The cover incorporates elements drawn from the original correspondence exchanged between John and Mafalda. Handwritten letters, postal markings and period ephemera informed the visual direction, creating a design that feels authentic to the era while establishing an emotional connection to the story’s origins.
A subtle image of the Edelweiss flower was woven into the design as a meaningful symbolic element. During research for the project, the author discovered a pressed Edelweiss flower preserved among the letters — a recurring motif in the correspondence and a quiet reminder of her father’s German heritage. The flower serves as both a historical reference and a visual metaphor for memory, endurance and human connection across distance and time.
The goal was to create a cover that felt personal rather than overtly historical. By combining authentic handwritten elements with understated symbolism, the design invites readers into the story before they turn the first page.
The resulting cover balances historical authenticity with contemporary readability, allowing the emotional weight of the novel’s origins to become part of the reader’s experience.
The final cover serves as both a marketing tool and a tribute to the real people whose lives inspired the story. By drawing directly from original letters and family artifacts, the design establishes a meaningful connection between history and fiction while creating a distinctive visual identity for the published novel.
